Narcissus pseudonarcissus
Welsh: Blodyn Mis Mawrth
The principal native daffodil of Britain, Narcissus pseudonarcissus is the much-loved Lent Lily, famously immortalised by Wordsworth and one of the most cherished heralds of spring. With its graceful nodding flowers, pale outer petals, and rich yellow trumpet, it has a natural elegance quite distinct from the larger modern hybrids.
Found in damp woodland, meadows, and old grassland, it naturalises readily in suitable conditions and is particularly well suited to orchards, woodland edges, and informal garden settings where it may establish and return faithfully year after year. Flowering in March, as its Welsh name Cennin Pedr suggests, this delightful native species reaches a modest height of approximately 8–12 inches, blending gently into the spring landscape with a character entirely its own.
