Narcissus papyraceus
Bring a little spring indoors this winter with the beautiful Paperwhite Narcissus. These elegant daffodils produce clusters of delicate, pure white flowers with a wonderfully rich fragrance, filling your home with colour and scent during the colder months.
Perfect for growing indoors, Paperwhites are remarkably easy to grow and require no special chilling treatment. Simply plant in a pot of compost or a decorative bowl with pebbles and water, and enjoy watching them come to life.
Flowers typically appear around 4–6 weeks after planting, depending on growing conditions, making them a lovely choice for winter displays and seasonal gifts.
Paperwhites are also an excellent choice for schools, children's growing projects and anyone discovering the joy of gardening. Their relatively quick growth allows children to watch roots develop, shoots emerge and beautiful flowers unfold.
How to Grow Paperwhite Narcissus Indoors
-
Fill a pot with peat-free compost, leaving the pointed tips of the bulbs exposed. Alternatively, place the bulbs in a shallow bowl of decorative pebbles.
-
Position the bulbs close together, without touching.
-
Water the compost lightly, keeping it moist but never waterlogged. If using pebbles, add water to just below the base of the bulbs so that the roots can reach it.
-
Place in a cool, bright location, away from direct heat.
-
Watch as green shoots emerge and develop into beautiful, fragrant flowers!
Top tip: Plant a few bulbs every couple of weeks for a succession of gorgeous indoor flowers throughout winter.
