Muscari armeniacum Grape Hyacinth

A classic and very easy-to-grow spring bulb, Muscari armeniacum produces dense spikes of rich blue, lightly fragrant flowers, each delicately edged with white.

Native from the Balkans to the Caucasus, Grape Hyacinths are particularly well suited to well-drained soils in the UK. They are reliable, hardy and excellent for naturalising, gradually forming attractive colonies that return year after year.

They work beautifully planted beneath deciduous trees, through the front of borders, in rock gardens or in containers, and combine particularly well with daffodils, species tulips and other early spring bulbs. Their flowers are also valuable to early bees and other pollinators.

For the most natural effect, plant in informal groups or drifts rather than in straight lines.

Planting & care

Plant bulbs in autumn with the pointed end facing upwards. Choose a well-drained position in sun or partial shade and avoid ground that remains waterlogged over winter.

Once established, Muscari armeniacum generally requires very little care. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering, as this helps replenish the bulb for the following year. Clumps can be lifted and divided if they become congested.
