Fritillaria meleagris

Welsh: Britheg

This is the fascinating native fritillary, with red purple to cream flowers, chequered dark and light. It occurs naturally in damp meadows in Southern England but is now rare in the wild. Planted in soil that does not dry out, and in full sun, it flowers in April. Ht.10". Planted at least 4" deep under turf is a good way to avoid depredation by rodents.
