Asarum europaeum
Grown in gardens in Britain for centuries as ground cover in woodland, and as a remedy for drunkenness amongst other complaints. It makes a slowly spreading mat of evergreen foliage. Rounded green leaves reflect the light and hide the curious purple flowers typical of the family. It is the only member of the intriguing Birthwort family, Aristolochiaceae, that has been considered native in Britain.
