This is a beautiful late flowering pure white double daffodil. Coming out in May but a little earlier than the famous Double White (N. poeticus recurvus flore pleno), it is neater, shorter and more compact but has an equally gorgeous scent. Pre 1950, so not quite as old, but a classic.

Reaching just 6”-8” this jonquil, quite a bit smaller than other jonquils, this cultivar is nevertheless vigorous and naturalises well. In late April it has 2 -3 soft yellow flowers per stem and a delightful scent.

From similar moist rocky environments but this time centred in the mountains of the Balkans at the other end of Europe. Sometimes referred to as Nodding Star of Bethlehem, silvery bell flowers with a green stripe on the outside of the petals hang on one side of 1ft spikes . Flowering in March it is particularly striking in densely planted bunch.

This species has spikes of brilliant white bell shaped flowers spiralling up 18” stems in March and April. High in the Sierras of Andalucía it hides from the goats on inaccessible slopes, enjoying the high winter rainfall and perfectly suited to our gardens here.

Known as Striped Squill, this is another native of the mountains of the Middle East. A beautiful, early spring bulb, it has very pale blue flowers each with a dark blue stripe. It grows easily planted in well-drained soil in partial shade or sun.

This produces and attractive and striking umbel of purple flowers like a drumstick, June-July. Native, though rare in the wild in Britain, it is a good subject for the garden, planted in meadow conditions and in borders. The flowers dry well for winter arrangement.

Alpine Squill. Flowering in early spring, this is good for naturalising under shrubs, or among perennials like Hellebores. Only 10cm (4) high, each bulb produces two leaves and a spike of vivid starry blue-violet flowers.

Also known as Turkish Squill. Originally coming from the cool shores of the Black Sea, this squill naturalises extremely well here, enjoying most woodland conditions and some moisture. Of a similar size to our bluebell, it spreads in the same way to provide a carpet of blue but a month earlier. Although a most useful and attractive plant it is currently ignored by most bulb producers.

Pyrenean Squill. From woods and damp places on the slope of the Pyrenees this has large scaly lily like bulbs. Planted in open woodland its wide shiny foliage emerges as the snowdrops flower, before presenting its squill flowers in late April.
