This reliable squill flowers early in spring, and will grow almost anywhere provided the bulbs do not get too hot and dry in the summer. The flowers are deep blue and bell-shaped, with five on a flowering stem. A most attractive sight planted in drifts.

Triangular stems support white bell shaped flowers
in spring (April to May) and is about bluebell size in height. It is found in hedgerows in Britain and Ireland, although it is a naturalised alien from the West Mediterranean region. It is another good species for a wild part of the garden in the open or shade, but be warned, it can be a bit of a thug and can spread prolifically.

The 'Toad Trillium'. Wild in woods in Eastern N America, this can make an impressive feature. But this one has deep maroon flowers on mottled foliage. It likes growing in rich leafy soil in shade, and reaches 8-12 inches in height.

The unique and exotic shape of this tulip, with its thin pointed yellow petals, heavily streaked with red, was a sensation when it arrived in Europe at the beginning of the 19th Century from the bazaars of Istanbul. Flowering in April, it is now considered a form of Tulipa agenensis from the mountains of the Middle East.
