Soon after Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire for a thousand years, fell to the Turks in 1453 it is supposed that this Colchicum, possibly a cross with the Anatolian species C.cilicium was sent west and has populated European gardens ever since. Like our Meadow Saffron it thrives in grass meadows with large impressive pink flowers.

Forming floral carpets on the high rainfall slopes of the mountains bordering the eastern Black Sea, the land of Colchis of course, this species of Colchicum thrives in our gardens and again can be planted in moist grassland. The rich pink flowers are white throated making a pleasing contrast with C.autumnale.
