Also known as Meadow Saffron, this flowers in September with beautiful pale purple blooms, the lush foliage follows in the spring and for this reason it is also called Naked Ladies. Common names are otherwise misleading as this is neither a Crocus nor produces saffron. Naturally occurring stands in moist meadows in Southern Britain are nowadays a treasure, but it used to be vigorously discouraged in grazing meadows being poisonous to livestock.

Soon after Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire for a thousand years, fell to the Turks in 1453 it is supposed that this Colchicum, possibly a cross with the Anatolian species C.cilicium was sent west and has populated European gardens ever since. Like our Meadow Saffron it thrives in grass meadows with large impressive pink flowers.

The rich pink flowers are white throated making a pleasing contrast with C.autumnale.
