The unique and exotic shape of this tulip, with its thin pointed yellow petals, heavily streaked with red, was a sensation when it arrived in Europe at the beginning of the 19th Century from the bazaars of Istanbul. Flowering in April, it is now considered a form of Tulipa agenensis from the mountains of the Middle East.

This is an early flowering tulip which also made a big impression here two hundred years ago when it was introduced from Central Asia. Before it is fully open the flower appears like a ball of flame, the pointed rich red petals tipped with flaming yellow. Opening, it reveals its golden heart.

Acis autumnalis This used to be under the name Leucojum autumnale, and has the same white bell shaped flowers of the other Snowflakes (see Native Bulb Section). The flowers appear, 4” -6” high, with slender grass like foliage in late summer and early autumn. A plant of the Mediterranean, it is easy to grow here in any well drained spot in grass or border.

Triangular stems support white bell shaped flowers
in spring (April to May) and is about bluebell size in height. It is found in hedgerows in Britain and Ireland, although it is a naturalised alien from the West Mediterranean region. It is another good species for a wild part of the garden in the open or shade, but be warned, it can be a bit of a thug and can spread prolifically.
