Gladiolus communis ssp byzantinus
This is a European species with magenta flowers in June. It has been grown in gardens in Britain for centuries but populations are also found on roadside and field margins in many parts of the country. This is not the weaker plant that has gone under the name Gladiolus byzantinus (which is now thought to be Gladiolus italicus). Best in drier sunny places.
